Kathryn Khulman

A long while ago I read a book about Kathryn Khulman. She was a legendary evangelist of the 20th century America. But before I picked up the book I didn't even know who she was. Never even heard about her. But the book gave me a profound impression about her. Years later I read a book Good Morning Holy Spirit written by Benny Hinn. In the book he said he had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit during her revival. His description of the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit always remained in my memory. Today by chance I found several videos of Kathryn Khulman's ministries in YouTube. I was thrilled to see her in the video clips. But her messages were hollow. Too simple and repetitive of the same message. I understood that though because there wouldn't be much to talk about for the subject of the Holy Spirit. One has to experience His presence and that's all that matters. In the videos she looked like an actress. She was actually performing an act. Perhaps that was why now deceased Episcopal priest Dae Chun Duck was once doubted her as a true believer. She was a such an enigmatic figure and her life story that I read in the book has remained in my memory for such a long time. She had the power of the Holy Spirit in her hand but at the zenith of her ministry she fell in love with a minister, a married man with a wife and children. When I read that part of her life story I was shocked and intrigued. What in the world was going on? Holiness and sin go hand in hand? Years after she came to her sense, repented, and severed the relationship with the man. It appears though she resumed her ministry as an evangelist. In the videos I could see her old in her fifties and sixties. That means the preachings were done after she had done with the relationship. In the book however she was no longer with the power of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps then she was doing the ministry for the sake of it at that time. How much popular she was I have no idea. They were all taken in 1970s. Her prime time must have been in 1940s I guess. Benny Hinn by 1970s already took her baton. He has since been active and powerful up until today. But those of us who saw what happened to Pastor Cho Yonggi are very cautious. Those who know what happened to some of the famous televangelists are watchful. It's not that easy. Man falls. God never shares glory. But apart from all the stories of those miracle performers, I've been very curious about the thing. How one can communicate with the Holy Spirit. How to walk with Him, share thoughts with Him and do things with Him. So I picked up some more books on the matter and read them recently. The best known book may be Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, a 16th century monk. It's a uniquely challenging book I may say. I know what it is all about and what it takes to have fellowship with God. Sooner or later I will get there. It is just a matter of time. But first I will have to put my house in order. The time will come.
